Someone gave me this roo for food. :) He's not heavy and doesn't feel like a meat bird. My Production Red hen is pictured next to him and weighs more. The other is a large fowl dark cornish, less than a year old. He has feathers on his legs. He's not dinner anymore. He's a fantastic rooster, it's quite something to watch him with the hens. But, now the buff orpington rooster we have is on trouble. :)

Thanks!

I'm trying to decide if I should let the hens go broody on those eggs or eat them and purchase fertile eggs from meat birds. He is such a funny little guy. Apparently all of our past roosters didn't have good "rooster skills". He's protective of them and calls to them when he's found food and will pick it up and drop it in front of him. When we had a predator attack, he found a safer place for him and the girls to roost. He makes my buffy look more like chicken pot pie every day.

Marans don't really mature till they are about 18 months old.... if that is what he is. I can't tell you what to do on the eggs.... but if you like him as the MAIN roo... keep him... he is nice yard candy

I think he's older than 18 months, his spurs are pretty decent in size. The gentleman I purchase my eggs from gave him to me, I'll ask him the next time I see him.

Possibly just a good old mutt.
