That's a great idea! Think I will steal that one. I wanted to leave grass in the run but figured they would just stomp it down eventually. Also my ground will have to be leveled to build it so there goes the grass. Maybe I should get some planters and start growing some now so it will be ready to go in!Here are two pics of the grass "salad bar" I have barley and clover in mine....and they LOVE it.View attachment 1073835
I bet I could use a flat shovel to cut out some grass mats of my own and save them to lay back down.I used plastic hardware cloth (amazon) and stapled it to the top of the boards. Used chicken run duff as the growing medium. Everything grew right up..
If you already have grass you could just put the whole thing over the grass and maybe not have to seed it! They can be any size you want of course.
Also (thinking alla the time that me) you could get grass mats from the garden store to put under...
I have beautiful zoysia grass where I will be putting the enclosure but I do not think there is anyway to cut up the grass mats without destroying the grass. It doesn't have to same root system as a regular grass but I do need to put the wire fencing under the run as well to make sure nobody takes underneath to get in. Short of calling in a contractor to dig a huge trench around it and fill it with concrete I guess I'll be digging all that grass up lolI used plastic hardware cloth (amazon) and stapled it to the top of the boards. I really want her to be able to be on the grass. She lives to pick and dig and I'm afraid it just wouldn't be the same with the wire there.I think you could just lay hardware cloth down and the grass will grow through.
