I have no idea what I am doing

Well friends Mike and I are in the gazebo with Lucky and Flynn. It's currently 28 degrees and 14 windchill. This sucks. The ducks were in the pond all day and night and don't seem to mind it. Lucky actually had little ice pellets on her side I guess from splashing around. It's much better inside the gazebo it's about 38 but that's because we are in here with the light on. I was wondering what you think about one of those heated mats that are for outdoor pets. I think it's a very low temp. I thought for under their bedding on nights when it's below freezing out.

Steven, I would recommend not doing it. Lucky's mom is out there somewhere with no heat and she would be too if her mom would have stayed in the nest. They have natural insulation with all those feathers.
If you give them heat and the power goes out, they will not be accustomed
to being without it and you will have to find a way to get them heat.
They will be fine. Tough love, Dads. Hang in there.

The ducks I had were Muscovies but here is a picture of them. I live in northern Illinois (straight west of Chicago, about half way across the state).
The cold doesn't seem to bother them.

I love you guys. This is the cheapest therapy you can ask for lol. The reassurance really does help. I think what is so hard for me is that I will always see Lucky as that tiny, helpless little baby I brought into this world and kept under heat lamps for her first few weeks and I just want to feel ok with this. I'm sure I will but I almost didn't survive her first night out of the house in July lol. I'm thinking the winter will be much harder on me than it will be on my babies.

Exactly! :thumbsup

I know. Everyone keeps saying not to and Raven will probably scream when she reads it lol. I get ok with the idea of not doing it and then we get a day like today and I feel terrible. I guess I will get over this too just like I've had to get used to so many other things. This is the hardest thing To get used to.

I'd never scream at you, my friend... :p
But I will repeat... down parkas... unremovable down parkas...

I'm thinking the winter will be much harder on me than it will be on my babies.

You got that right! Hang in there! :hugs
