I have offended the Hatching Gods

I don't know exactly how, but I had to have. After a great first hatch I just candled my second incubator load; I'm on days 13-16 (staggered hatch, obviously). I found a whole bunch of miscarriages and had to take a lot of eggs out of the bator. Out of 14 Salmon Faverolles, I'm down to 5 good eggs, from 10 at the first candling. Out of 15 Ameraucanas, I'm down to 7 good ones, out of 13 good ones at the first candling! Thank goodness, my Lavender Orps are still the same as the last candling, 6 good out of the original 8.

I don't know what happened. I haven't had bad temps and they aren't blood rings, they're early quitters.

I guess you can't have a great hatch every time.

It always happens with shipped eggs.
And new studies are showing that radiation from the heat source are causes for quitters.

Don't sweat it, you'll have better luck next time.

I had over 60% of my shipped eggs hatch last time. Maybe I just got lucky.

Electricity produces radiation. The higher the wattage on a heating element, the more radiation is released.
I doubt its enough to affect humans, but accordingly, it is powerful enough to kill young embryos.

If that were it, my first batch would have been early quitters, too. Whatever happened, I'm just glad it didn't affect my Lavender Orps. And it better not happen to the bbs Orps I've got coming! I'll have to think of something to propitiate the hatching gods before those arrive.

Me too. SInce most of my home grown hatches are around the 95-100% mark, unless I screw something up. Shipped hatches can be from 0-75%...usually closer to 0
