I havean issue 300lb issue!!

Hot wire your place and put some rawe bacon on the wire, once it grabs that bacon he won't be comming back for a while if at all
Sorry for your loss.
Did you ask the fish and game who do you call when it attacs your child? they should at least remove it from your area, it's not safe for you or the bear.

I agree with the hot wire to prevent future encounters but that bear sounds dangerous.

Around here our conservation department is quick to deal with habituated bears. If I caught the bear in the act or if he loitered around after the deed like this one - I would have to shoot him. Not something I take lightly.

Odd attitude on the part of fish and game. I would have asked for the name of the person who told me, "Too bad, you live in bear country."

Quote: Wow, I find this shocking. I looked it up and in NH they do just tell ya, "Hey, get an electric fence, buddy!"

We have a federal trapper comes out for a nominal fee and captures/kills any predator eating our birds.

Why should Mendocino County have this but you don't? Bear trapping for all!

Edited for clarity.

Last night was a quiet night here but neighbors about 1/4 mile away were not so lucky he tore there trash on there deck and wrecked the dog house that there very small dog had:(

I'm so sorry for your loss. I feel your pain however. I had my first bear attack Monday. He took out a small coop and killed four of the six bantams in it. Two roos were able to fly into a tree to escape. Like you, I got the same pitiful response from Wildlife. And, I got blamed for not protecting my birds better. Go figure. My remaining birds are cooped in either sturdy sheds or in the main barn. I didn't have the money to put up electric fence but did take a couple helpful suggestion from our local animal control (who was wonderful). Our area has been slammed by bears this year. A 400 bruin, a mama with two babies and a 150 lb. yearling. What he told me was to put up chimes anywhere the bear might encounter them. Additionally to make spike boards and hammer them to windows, runs, etc. Take a 2 x 4 and hammer in nails at an angle so that when you look at the board it makes a V. Put these around anything you are trying to protect. The bear reaches in, gets punctured by the nails and moves along.

Just as an FYI last night my motion light went off, I heard the chimes and went flying out of the house with pots and pans. I made one heck of a noise and the bear took off, not to be seen again that night. I'm waiting for him again tonight to keep up the aversion.

Good luck to you and I hope you can keep the bears away from your chickens.

Wow so glad you shot that bear before it was able to get close to you and the kids.

What insane laws that require people to just wait till they are under attack.A bear headed my way is obviously not coming to chat. Why does the law insist on waiting till a human is hurt or killed to act? You have a right to protect yourself.

I would not wait till a bear is feet from me before I tried to kill it.A habitual bear in the yard is a risk I am not willing to live with.Ever seen pictures of human/bear close encounters? Nope, not going that route just because some twit said," To bad live with it."

Sorry for your losses, and sorry you were put into a situation where you had to kill or be killed. Electric fence sounds like a good addition to the yard.
