Last night we hatched off seven baby chicks. One chick had a small red bulbus mass on its rectum. Within a minute or two what appeared to be internal organs began to come from the rectum. After reaching about an inch long it broke or fell off the chick. The chick seems okay today, but I was wondering if anyone knew what this was or why it happened? thank you in advance for the help.

i had something similar happen with several of my hatchlings this summer. The first one seemed to get stuck to the egg and pulled out a lot of what looked like intestines. Raced it to a vet but they could not help so put him down. After that, i watched each birth and if i saw a something begin to pull out or get stuck i would snip it.

i have no idea what this was. One had a bit that stayed connected and dried up, and i snipped it after a day or so. He is fine now.

Also, where this was pulled from is not the vent. It is a spot below the vent. Perhaps on a baby chick this was the umbilical cord?
