I just can't do this anymore. Advice, please!!

I'm a strict vegetarian.

That was another reason I didn't want to let my dog eat them, I didn't want her getting maggots in her belly. Not sure if it works like that or not, but I didn't want to risk it.

FYI for future referecnce....momma bunny only comes back once or twice a day at dusk and dawn to prtect her babies from predators. best way to see if she is still around is to put the babies back, cover them and place a piece of yarn or two in an X over the nest. If it is disturbed in the morning...or in a 24hr period, she was around....

Yeah, that's what I said too. My dog dug up a rabbit whole with about 7 or 8 babies in it, she didn't kill any they just got out. We put them back and did the yarn/stick thing and infact the momma rabbit did come back.

I totally agree with Beekissed. There is nothing wrong with livestock guard dogs eating some wild rabbits. I know you don't like to hear and/ or see it, but it really is just part of the natural way of things. There are far more wild rabbits that provide food for various predators then actually make it to adult hood. It happens every minute of everyday.

And I would really like to know who started the idea that HUMANS are not part of nature??? I am part of nature as are my dogs and cats. That idea I just don't get. We aren't aliens from mars. We are as much a part of the "natural" world as anything else and so are any animals we domesticated. JMHO

Amen, sister!

But why make something suffer when you have the power to stop it. I mean, toothabcesses are natural, but you head of to the dentist to stop the pain, right?? Childbirth is natural, but epidurals are offered. Headaches are natural, but you take aspirin, rain is natural but you put up a roof to stop yourself from being subjected to it, tornados are naturals but people take cover.

So, next time their is a tornado, head outside as it is natural and natures way, and if you survive, then I support you letting your dog purposely kill baby bunnies.

Wow, how snotty I am!!

If we stopped every animal from being eaten than the populations would explode and throw off the balance of nature. I know it is distressing and I probably would have stopped my dog to but I more than likely would have just walked away. Dogs are predator wether we like it or not. They are descendent from wolves and still have all those traits in them. I am sorry that it happened and that you had to experience it but it is the way of nature.

Congratulations on finding a rehabber to take them. I used to try to do it myself, but they know more and have what they need. When I find orphans - even if they are nusance birds - I take them to the rehabbers and give them a donation. I took a batch of babies to one and she had a house full of babies with a feeding schedule and all - she was better equipped and had her day planned - trying to fit 3 little babies into my busy day was much less optimal. I would encourage everyone to seek out rehabbers and have their numbers handy. I always leave their home feeling lighter than air with relief.

I caught the neighbor's dog coming back for his 4th chicken - I wanted to kill him. But I didn't, I put him in my kennel with water and shade until they can come take him home and secure it. I am sympathetic, but my dogs are not allowed to hunt wildlife - I give them dog food. They are to guard against attacks not make them.
