The first one looks like a young Butler Bobwhite. Appears to be about 3 months old, male.

The second one looks like a young Tennessee Red Bobwhite. It is very difficult to sex Tennessee's. They either lay an egg or crow/call for a mate.

First one is a female bob and her toenails are bit overgrown so keep an eye on them. The other is a tennessee red which is a color that doesn't autosex (you can't look at the feathers and tell the sex). I would suggest looking on youtube for a soundbite of a bobwhite roosters call and listening for it. If the red is a roo it will likely begin mounting the hen soon if it hasn't already which is another way to tell.

If the birds are more than six months old they should begin to lay eggs by next month, if they are less than six months old by too much they will not lay until next season (May to August).

Your friend kinda pushed you into the deep end. Bobs are not the easiest quail to raise, they can be very aggressive if kept improperly. To make it a little better all quail require high protein game bird food and you may have a hard time finding it depending on where you live. You'll want to feed them at least 24% protein game bird feed or game bird starter. If you can't find it, 26 or 28% turkey starter is an acceptable alternative.

Reading this will help you get started.

Hmmm....You are right DC....didn't see the claws on that first one. (It appeared to be a young bird growing into a male, but the claws give it away) An older hen, no doubt a Georgia Giant. Too large to be a Butler or a Northern.
