I just got my first chicken ever yesterday and I think I need some changes to my coop.

Hi, thanks for the reply. The wire basket will be filled made into another nest. I don't know if they like to be up there or down on the floor, so I did both. It will be painted and whitewashed in a few days. How do I need to set up the litter? Designate a corner, fill it with hay or something and they will learn to poop there?
I only clean mine 2x a yr spring and fall so I can't help you in that but I would put straw down under the roosts they poop in there sleep and most roost to sleep

Hello people,
You've gotten some good advice above.
Curious about ventilation in that coop?

I've heard peeps say they use linoleum flooring. Would be a solution for protecting your particle board! Lots of great advice in this chicken 🐔 loving ❤ community 👍 good luck!

The flooring isn’t plywood or particle board. It’s oriented strand board (OSB). It’s likely rated for exterior sheathing so it’s not
just going to crumble at the first sign of moisture. Put something like roll vinyl on top for easier clean up and the flooring will last a long time

OSB won't fall apart overnight but even being exterior sheathing in that use it's designed to be covered and protected. The junk will not stand up for long as the floor of a coop unless it's covered with something like linoleum. I've seen it come apart simply painted even with exterior paint so I wouldn't waste my time. Truthfully I stay away from OSB in anything I build. The humidity here makes it flake apart in a years time even if covered and protected. I've been inside attics running wiring and seen the roof just coming apart.
