I just left my Pit at the vets for her surgery.

Many vets don't do surgery. They treat it conservatively with lancing and time. They go down by themselves within a few weeks as the blood reabsorbs. Painkillers, steroids and time will heal them as long as you treat the underlying ear infection that causes the repeated head shaking that caused the hematoma in the first place.

From everything I've read about this, if it is not treated with surgery, it can take weeks for it to heal, and the ear will continue to enlarge and scare. The dog will be in pain (with a pit you'd never know), and the ear will look horrible when everything is said and done. I'd rather get the surgery, have her in pain for a few day instead of just medicating it, and letting her suffer. I've talked to several people since her first surgery last year for the other ear, and I have yet to talk to anyone who's vet didn't suggest surgery.
