Absolutley not! I had chickens when I was just a year old. 45 at that! Although, where I live (and still live 23yrs later) bobcats got them one by one. Earlier this year for my birthday in March, my boyfriend got me 6 chickens. 2 died pretty quickly as the wern't very healthy. Then we built a nice coop and a run where we kept the remaining 4 these last few months. They were awesome. They knew your voice, ate out of your hands, and were so funny to watch. I had a runt I think, he was a small rooster, so I named him Squirt. He didn't know how to walk, he ran everywhere he went!
Last night though, we had a break in. Robbed us of all 4 of our beloved chickens. Thought it was a bobcat, until my boyfriend sat on the barn roof just a little bit ago, and saw two huge coons coming toward the coop. He was able to shoot one, but the other got away. This is the first I've heard of coons eating chickens, but doing reasearch on this site, I found it's not so uncommon.
I hope to maybe build an even better coop, that's racoon proof in the future to have more chickens. We are heart broken. Even our little dog ran out to the coop and looked very confused. He was friends with them.
Glad to see your love for chickens! They really are great. Such personalities and of course, you gotta' love their eggs!
Nice to "meet" you!
