I'm as much of a newbie at chicken-keeping as you are and I've found it a good idea to check over the stickies at the head of every forum here. That might get you off to a good start at managing your birds, preventing and watching out for diseases, and protecting your flock from predators. Finding out if it's legal to keep chickens where you live might help you avoid nasty run-ins with neighbors.
