But I haven’t found any eggs from this pullet yet. Is she laying? Or just practicing her beautiful song? I have one leghorn who just started laying a week ago. One time when I caught my NH Red singing, my leghorn was sitting right next to her (all the others foraging). I think she was there for support and encouragement. I also caught the NH Red in the nesting boxes singing by herself. But she eventually left with no egg.

She will lay soon. My heritage RIR started singing a few weeks before first lay.

I’m so impatient I just can’t wait!! And soo chicken obsessed I can’t wait to see what shade of brown she lays.

As a chick my Plymouth Rock had prolapsed vent and I had to push it back in 3 times. Is she likely to lay do you think?

My Ameraucana just had her first egg song and I think she's still a couple weeks out- every bird is different but definitely keep a watch! Maybe some fake ceramic eggs or golf balls in the nesting boxes will encourage her?

Congrats! :wee:yesss:

Got two fake eggs and the rest plastic golf balls in every box :) today when I caught her in the nest singing I was actually changing out the coop. She keep pecking at the fake brown egg. At first I thought she was trying to roll it under her and I got excited I may have a broody.... but the more I watched her I think the more curious she was.

As long as it healed up I don’t see an issue with it but it is more likely to happen again if she lays giant eggs constantly.

My advice always is to be patient haha. I know how hard it is, but the wait is worth it. I always would check the boxes once a day when they would start singing until the first egg. I now go out 2-3 times a day to collect them. With 30 chickens I don’t want them broke.

We had our first broken egg today :th lucky hubby was home to hear her singing then went out to check. I’ve seen her somewhat freak out on the boxes before so I think she somehow kicked the egg to the floor outside the box. I told hubby today we need to get them more secured so that doesn’t happen again! Plus it freaks them out a little so will be best all around. I guess she came out of the coop screaming - hubby thinks she was upset she broke the egg haha.

They can be quite vocal as the come close to point of lay.
I had one group of pullets that were so loud that I had to close my house windows so I could work on the phone.

New layers can be quite goofy acting, they don't know what they are doing at first and can be confused and anxious, it can take up to a month or so before they get it all figured out. Putting some fake eggs or golf balls in the nest might help show them where to lay. They may scratch around in the nests for weeks before laying, spreading the bedding everywhere. They will scratch around a bit less in nest as they get used to the routine. Meanwhile, eggs everywhere, some of them can be rather funky looking, soft or thin shelled, huge double yolked eggs.
