I'm getting chicks on April 9th and have a empty coop I could brood them in with a heat lamp. I'm only getting 9 though would that be too few to try and brood outside in the coop. Do they need more to keep each other warm?

It shouldn't be too few....I only have 8 and they have done well. They stay under the lamp if they are cold...but I am finding mine spend less and less time under the lamp, they are 2 weeks old now and I have raised the lamp twice already. Give it a try, I think you will be glad you did.

Crystal, either sounds like a fine project, roosters can have lots of colors...I want to do a chicken or rooster weathervane, for the coop! I am going to try to convince a friend to do the copper parts.

An update on the chicks progress: we had some horrible weather last night. The low was 20°, the real feel with the wind chill was 13° :/ we had 35 mph winds with 50 mph gusts, it was just awful. So I covered the hutch on all sides as good as I could and hoped for the best (thank goodness we didn't loose power!). Alot of trees in my yard didn't make it, but the babies did! They were looking a little cold this morning when I checked on them, everyone huddled under the light, so I made them some warm oatmeal with smashed boiled egg. That seemed to perk everyone up.
