I just found my favorite hen, Daisy, dead. She was laying face down, legs stretched out behind her. She was acting fine a couple of hours ago. No signs of trauma, in good condition, only 1 1/2 years old. She laid an egg just yesterday (5 hens, 5 eggs). I suspect that she had a heart attack, the bad dog harassed them this morning and sent them all in a tizzy.

That's her in my avatar pic. She was my most consistently broody girl and raised the youngsters, although she has not had a broody episode in over a month. Before raising the youngsters, she was really sweet and attached to me. After becoming a fierce mama, she decided that I was there to serve her needs only, but would endure my affections. She was second in command and decided it was her job to be the enforcer.

It doesn't matter how much you prepare for it, its still hard to lose the ones you love. She was the first of my flock to go. Pleasant journey, Daisy, you will be missed.

So sorry for your loss, it's never easy to lose one.

Someone once posted on BYC, it's never "IF" it will happen, it's just a matter of "WHEN" it will happen. It sounds like Daisy had a good life with you.

Condolences :hugs

I’m so sorry for your loss!
We haven’t nearly been through what you have, but we did have a scare today. My sister went to check on our neighbor’s chickens and found 3 dead. Again my condolences :hugs
It seems wrong to "like" this post, but that's all we've got. Any idea what got the neighbor's chickens?

I bet that was hard to write! I can feel the tears from here.:(

Probably a Fisher. It got right into their henhouse, it wan't very secure. It was 30 years old and falling apart lol
Even though they weren't our chickens, I still feel awful, we were taking care of them that week. It's so weird, that they were alive one day and dead the next.
I'm afraid to bring their hen back that we were caring for during our chicken-sitting. (She could not walk due to a previous fox attack) I've grown attached to her and don't want her to get eaten by anything :(
So in a way I know how you feel. The very idea is enough for me. RIP daisy

So sorry. It's never easy when you lose a much loved hen. Especially when it's unexpected.
