Yeah I have noticed thier ability go get what they need also, Who knew mine needs A hamburger, some potato salad, and a handfull of tater chips.

P.S. Note to self...... If the phone rings, dont leave your plate on the picnic table if no one is out there to watch it. I bet it was Gladace the Purdue chicken tricking me into leaving my plate ungaurded.

Actually animals eat to reach a certain protein level. Protein is rather self limiting. Health problems in humans attributed to excess protein have not stood up to scientific scrutiny. The most common protein myth is that too much protein can cause kidney damage.

Problems with excess protein have been proven in horses, guinea pigs, and a few other grazing animals. With omnivores it is much more difficult to achieve high enough levels to cause problems. Which is why most research towards protein causing problems can be found with animals that are designed for a low protein diet.

Not all animals will only eat what they need. Do humans only eat what sugar they need? Do horses only eat what energy they need in grain? The other problem is when you only provide one food source with one protein level they have no choice. Starve or eat the protein level provided. It holds true that they could eat what they need when you feed individual items like a mix of grains and other ingredients. When we grind it all up and smash it back together or just mix it to the point it can't easily be seperated like in the case of sweet feeds then the animal can't eat what it needs. For every bite it takes it gets the ratio of nutrients you provide. If you make a feed 30% protein then every bite is 30% protein. In that way you can provide too much or too little of something even if the animal would have fed itself properly otherwise.
