Hi I'm lindsey I want to start a chicken coop and have my own eggs! Is it best to build your own or has anyone had good experience with bought chicken coops? Any books anyone would recommend? I'm a reader so it would help to have a book. TIA!!

One of the best places to start is the Learning Center, it has articles about all sorts of poultry topics and will help get you off on the right foot. There are a lot of poultry books out there, some of them you can find in the BYC Store (I don't have a particular one to recommend).

As for pre-built coops vs. onsite built coops, I think the majority of chicken keepers would agree that the pre-built ones are not the best way to go. They are expensive, too small for the number of chickens they claim to be big enough for and often flimsy. You can read reviews on coops (just like you can for a lot of other items) here:

If you have questions, feel free to ask, there are a lot of friendly members here to help you.

If you have any construction skills, or know someone who does, you are much better off building your own coop in my opinion.

Hi Lindsay, nice to meet you. After you read through the Learning Center, you will know a lot about chickens.

All the advice above is great. To be honest, i do have some books, but they are not a shade on what you can learn on BYC. If you wish, id be happy to send you the books i have (can't remember if they are pdf or iPad friendly). If so, just send me a PM with your email address.
