I have two regular white leghorn ladies. They are my best layers easily. One started August 1st (19 weeks old) One started August 14th (21 weeks old). I have gotten a LARGE egg every single day from the day the 21 week old started. She has not yet missed a single day since starting laying, going on 14 days in a row now. Her eggs are probably leaning towards XL now, haven't compared to store bought recently. The one who started the 1st has taken two days off but we are now at about 8 or 9 days in a row without a day off. Hers are a little smaller but still bigger than my RIR and whoever the other new layer is (jersey giant or cochin).

They are not overly friendly and DO NOT want to be handled. They will come nearby for treats but won't take them out of my hand. They are the top of the flock, other than my rooster. The super duper large egg layer is his favorite hen. They can fly extremely well and I had to clip wings to keep them in the 6 foot fencing. Even with much friendlier birds, I can't wait to get a few more of these girls. They are beautiful birds, lay big eggs, and are great at foraging around. They are often the last ones into the coop at night, as they are out looking for bugs. I love their big ol red floppy combs and the fact that they dont eat me out of house and home.

I used to have white leghorns. Sure they gave me lots of eggs and didn't eat as much as the other birds. BUT they were super flighty spazzes who wanted nothing to do with me. Only my 8yo could go in the pen without them freaking. To me, the eggs are great, but the best part of having chickens is getting to enjoy them. And while I will be getting more leghorns in the future (4H poultry judging), I just don't enjoy them as much. And that makes taking care of them more like WORK than a hobby.

If you're purely into the economics then Leghorns are the way to go. The best egg/feed conversion ratio and they lay good eggs. However, they are "used up" for egg production in about a year while the less thrifty birds (production reds, sexlinks, RIRs, Rocks) can go pretty steadily up to three years. This seems like a good trade off to me.

Is it possible that ACV interferes with the calcium level? I'm no expert, but I know acids dissolve calcuim like crazy. Maybe you should try taking them off the ACV for a week or two.

We have one White Leghorn from a local breeder. I got her when I got my SLW and GLW. All of my chickens are the same age. The Leghorn and one chicken who lays a brown egg (I can't tell which one) started laying this week. I have gotten 4 eggs from my WL in 3 days. Very good size for firsties, REALLY hard shell. My daughter (who is 4) tried to help me break the eggs for frying the other morning and COULDN'T break the white ones.

My experience (extremely brief) with our Leghorn has been a great one. I am thinking of getting some more next year. MY BO Roo likes the Leghorn REAL BAD! haha. Dunno what a BO Roo crossed with a WL hen would produce...

Don't think I need to look/read again....I said my two cents worth to your "Ideal 236 Leghorn"
I have other breeds of hens, SLW,BLRW,GLW,RIR,RSL and some EE'S all eat the same feed, and only the WHITE LEGHORNS have problems.....as said before my two cents! did not know how special your Ideal 236's are to you, I only joined in to BYC so I could learn more about raising chickens....I did not know how nasty some people can get over a forum...Have a great day....
Thanks for the tip Rusty Hills Farm will try it....
