I have searched my topic and can't seem to find it. I asked about the wire floor in this brooder cage with the 1/4" square mesh. Someone suggested putting the rubber shelf liner over the wire so I am going to. Can I put pine chips over the liner to help keep it clean? I know about store bought day olds but will the mother hen teach the new chicks not to eat the chips? I can put the starter feed in a shallow bowl for the chicks to eat. I had to put starter feed on a small plate and move it around with my finger to get the store bought day olds to eat. John

the only chicks i really start are meat birds, and I put them straight on shavings. I feed them until they are too big--in old egg cartons.

I had to take some chicks from the broody mom the other day, b/c she got spooked from her nest and we couldn't get her to set again for a while--those chicks, i just put down paper for traction until they are sure about their legs, then i will put shavings in there.

thats about all I can offer.
