I let a broody hen hatch one of her eggs..

I've been incubating all of my pure Silkies for a short while now, as each egg is very precious to me. I have a broody hen, however, who was determined that she would raise her own clutch. So I took all but one of her eggs, figuring I could sacrifice one chick to the cruel hazards of the natural world if absolutely necessary so this hen didn't lose her mind to depression..

Today, I found this in my run.

Not only is she an excellent mother, apparently these two like to have daily chats about the way the world works.

I went to college in Irvine. How about.. you come here and feed all my critters, for oh.. say.. a few months, and I'll enjoy Southern California for a bit? Ha ha! I love it out there.

I especially love Palm Desert. If you ever get down this way, let me know.. we have plenty of room and can always use an extra hand or nine!

Oh my gosh I'd love to. Don't know when that will be. When my daughter goes to college in a few years. she may be out that way. Did you go to UC irvine? We are an hour and a half away. My mom was in Anaheim. Ill feed your critters ANY time as long as I can bring the bloodhound! He needs a place to run around. It is too crowded and expensive here. I'll look you up if I come that way!

the first picture!! And by the looks of the second you have one coddled baby there.

I could have bought two white silkies at and auction a couple of weeks ago, but decided that since I'm a newbie I should make sure I don't kill my ordinary chicks before moving on to fancy ones.
