And I am a wannabe chicken keeper. I am building a coop and a run but I have no chickens. I want only about 7 laying hens. I like brownish eggs. What kind of chickens do I need, and where can I buy them?

! Great to have you here! You've come to the right place for poultry advice. Lots of great egg laying breeds out there - Buff Orpington, Rhode Island Red, Black Stars and Red Stars, Australorps, Delawares...top name but a few. It's getting late in the year but farm and ranch stores are good sources. If they are out you can order from a hatchery - here is a link - good luck to you!!

I recommend Meyers for 7 hen. Murray mcmurray is great, but they have a 15 chick minimum. Orpingtons, Rhode Island Reds, Speckled Sussex, Plymouth Rocks, Red stars, Black stars, Delawares, Australorps, and many others are great.
