Well, today, I lost Dora the Explorer, a Cornish X, born 10/28/21. I had decided to save her and her buddy Nora because I couldn’t bear to kill them. She was one of the healthiest of the smaller chickens in the flock and she and Nora looked like twins.
Yesterday I noticed her comb was 1/2 dark and 1/2 red. She was panting and staring. Not interested in talking or anything she normally does. I thought she must be overheated or having a possible stroke. So I put her in a shallow bath and she slowly laid down in the water.
I semi-dried her and she fell asleep standing up obviously cooled off and content. We gave her some electrolytes in a dropper and she drank it down. Her comb returned to the normal red color. Then she foraged a little on and off through the day and seemed okay, but not completely herself.
My husband said the chickens went into the coup in the evening as normal. Sadly she was gone this morning when I went out to open the coup.
She was a great chicken with lots of gumption but unfortunately her physical makeup did not coincide with longevity. She will be missed and fondly remembered!!
