MY blue silkie sadly passed away. I was wondering if any of you had some insight. The chicks were all very healthy looking this morning, cleaned their boxes, light is on them, in a small room with a heat regulator at around 85-90 degrees. I had given them some sugar water as suggested when i first brought them home and was slowly decreasing the amount of sugar in the water each day (I started with 1 tablespoon per gallon of water mixed, fresh water every 12 hours so as not to breed bacteria in the sugar water, and I got them on saturday). All butts were clean and dry this morning and around 11am. Around 4:30pm today my roommate came home and called me a panic, the blue was pushed down in the shavings on her side gasping for air and very cold. I told her to wrap her in a towel and bring her to the hospital i work at. We sat her in an oxygen mask, gave her subcutaneous fluids, and sat her on a warm water fluid bag (towel seperated them so as not to burn her). She slowly started to breath a little better then around 7pm she took a turn for the worst and sadly passed away
I am so upset. It should also be noted that her cloaca was pretty messy but it wasnt earlier in the day. Does pasty butt come on fairly quickly? Upon examining her after passing away her crop seemed empty and she was also pretty thin on palpation of her belly. I know I had seen her eating really well! She didnt seem too dehydrated all though im sure was because of the condition she was in, but not to a severe point. I checked the other chicks crops they were all full, they were all eating like they always do, and drinking, and still have clean butts. One of the silkies bellies was a little thinner than than the others but i wouldnt call them starving thin for a bird. So I have sent the blue silkie off for necropsy as I dont want them to have something transmittable and if there is anything I can treat the remaining chicks for I will definitely be very proactive in doing so
. So I guess my question is does pasty butt happen within hours? Could you think of another possible reason for losing this chick? Should this happen again in the future what changes I should make in treatment? I was in tears trying to keep the little blue one alive
Oh and the chicks are about 10 days old, they were not shipped, they were bought from a local hatchery which was amazing i might add! I am relatively new to the raising baby chicks game, but have raised ducklings and had older chickens. Thanks guys!
