i lost one last night

Are they panting? They could be too hot. How close to the heat lamp are they? If they are as far away as they can get and they are panting, they are too hot.

I don't use a thermometer - I go by how the chicks act. They should be running around - not panting, not huddled up.
 
Panting AND huddled? That strikes me as out of kilter.

When they are too hot, they DO pant, but try to get away from the heat. THey usually spread out, too.
If it's too hot, they may be huddled - but it should be as far from the heat as they can get.

One way to know is to move the heat farther from them.
