I made this coop closet….what to use it for?

Hi,

My coop is getting finished and I had a closet built in it for storage, except now it’s better for me to store food and snacks in the climate controlled garage so I’m trying to figure out how to use the space. I think I can store bedding and cleaning tools in it but want to dissuade rodents from trying to make cozy homes in the pine bedding. Would it work to store clean pine bedding in a galvanized garbage can in my nifty new closet?

A chicken friend said I should make it a space for the chickens, but trust me, they have plenty of their own space and I can see appreciating having somewhere for rakes, brooms, a folding camp chair so I can hang out there with them. They can’t have everything of mine!

Sure, tho don't think the bale of pine shavings would make such a good place for rodents......unless you have a plethora of rodents.

I use the compressed kind that fluffs up once you open the bag (something like 8 cu feet). I didn't originally think an unopened bag of that would be exciting for rodents either - but I just want to take as many precautions as I can before I find out the hard way. In theory, my coop is "rodent proof," but I don't want to test that. Thanks.

Oh, you'd be surprised. And even if they didn't live in it they will chew on the plastic and get the shavings everywhere. I can't store plain old tarps out in the open without them being chewed on. Better safe than sorry.

I would try just storing the bedding in the closet and put down one or two snap traps. If you are catching more than 1 a month then I would try out a bin of some kind as an extra barrier.

Turn it into a closet incubator. That's what I'd do.
