Maybe he is a sexlink, and was put in your assortment of females because he did not have a head spot. So at hatch he looked female, even though he now manages to look both barred and male.
That certainly could be.

I have to think that comb has to mean boy even though Marans get those big single combs fairly early.
I'd love to have a blue-barred hen, but I really want to have a Blue Australorp rooster to get some purebreds along with my backyard mixes.
