LOL! They do that because some people get on freecycle to spam the group about "free" information on working from home or "free" TVs if you show up at the house wearing fishnet stockings and high heels.....

Everyone that joins has to be approved first. That's just the way they do it. In my freecycle group, your first posts have to be offers too, you can't just come in and say "I want, I want, I want".

I don't get what the deal is. "Approval" isn't a hazing like on a college frat boy movie. It means just that your IP address is approved & won't be used to broadcast spam & porn.

If that upset you, don't go to ravelry.com - it's a site for knitters and you have to be

approved

(basically it's b/c the site owners are safeguarding server space by managing how many people can use the site at once).

It's really not you... they want to keep the spammers and the automatic spam programs and bots and email address collectors out of the lists, so they make sure everyone is a "real" person with a real IP address and email address, so they can contact members when they need to. Please reconsider, you'll like Freecycle! The rules are just to keep things orderly and as spam free as possible.

I've tried to join my local freecycle 2 times, but have never been accepted.

What do you answer for this question - "Please tell the group owner about yourself and why you would like to join the group"

? That I want to..... get rid of the 6 bikes, tires and carpet remnants that are in my shed?

I probably over reacted to the approval notice, but being married to an American Indian, and having been told many times "we have the right to refuse service to anyone" and we don't serve half breeds you get a little? paranoid, no, a lot paranoid. So If I offended anyone I am truly sorry.as its my problem.
