I am looking for the most popular chicken breed. If there is one, and you know what it is or how I could find out........I need to know.

Thanks,

Rhode Island Red and Leghorns have very high egg productivity, if that is what your looking for. Also I like the Plymouth Rock, Easter Egger(blue eggs), and Buff Orpington(very fluffy).

You see, here's my situation. I have raised several different breeds before. I don't raise chickens for eggs or meat, I just enjoy raising them. So I need to breed something that I can sell to pay for the costs of al the different things. I have come to a very terrible realization, I need to just have one breed. It simplifies things a lot for me and allows me to free range all my birds. So, I like the rare/fancy breeds like Shamo, Cubalaya, polish, Brahmas ect. but they don't sell well here, so if I'm going to raise something that I don't like, mines well be the most popular. At least I'll still get to be raising something, right?

Thanks,

The thing is when you breed the most popular breed it means others will be too. That means you will have a LOT of competition and your prices will have to reflect upon that. No one is going to pay 5 dollars a chick when they can get the exact same breed down the road for 3. Plus when it comes to a lot of the more popular breeds the people making money are making money because of quantity not quality.

Kevin565, your right, I don't know any more. I need something that's in high demand, and around here it's big and meaty and lays lots of large eggs. And to fill the demand, I want something that matures quickly, has an excellent rate of lay and gets large, as well as goes broody. My choices that I'm thinking about are, Delaware, New Hampshire Red, Black Australorp, Sussex, and this last one is more of what I want combined with hopefully what I will be able to sell, the Ameraucana. Any other oppinions?

Thanks,

So if I can get something built that I think will be suitable, then this is what I plan to do. Get just one rooster, a RIR, and then get four different breeds for the hens, New Hampshire Reds, Delawares, Barred Rocks and Rhode Island Reds. That way I'll have all one flock that I can house together, but I'll have four different breeds to sell, pure RIR's, Production Reds and Red and Black Sex Links. Brilliant, huh? any ideas, comments, suggestions?
Thanks,

Sounds like you have a great idea going with the 4 different breeds. If you want something a bit fancier that is still a dual purpose bird you should think about Salmon Faverolles or possibly Mottled Houdans.
