i need a momma hen

If you already have a hen wanting to set (stays on the nest even at night), you can like the others suggested, slip them under her one at a time at night quietly. If she's "bocking" and has been setting a few weeks, she might scoot them in under her with her beak, but it's best if you can sneak them in under where it's warm. I did this with a batch of chicks I bought after one of mine started setting, she took them and did well. The next week a snake got half of them, so I bought another batch of six and she knew the difference and wouldn't take the new ones! I had to raise them like other years when I was starting out with no hens setting. Fortunately it was pretty warm being so late in the year here, so I put them in a small tough cage for a while then later in a hoop house during the day and brought them in at night in a cardboard box in the laundry room. I've raised them in the cold early spring in a large cardboard box in my garage with the hardware cloth (hailscreen) cover and the lightbulb with a reflector aimed so the box stays warm. When they expect you to come feed them, they will usually be much tamer than if a hen raises them.
You could also ask around your area to see if anyone has an old hen setting. I have one right now I'm trying to break from it! I put her in a high wire cage and she laid an egg the next day, even while acting broody! I let her out tonight, we'll see how she does. Usually takes several days to break them from wanting to set, so I don't know what's going on with her! Maybe they continue to lay a while when going broody to build a clutch. Anybody?
