My son is 10 and in the 4-H and is starting a breeding program. With that being said our friend donated some fertilized eggs for him to get the experience and hatch.
He put them in the incubator on Tuesday morning. He candled about an hour ago out of curiosity. 1/2 of them looked empty and porous. The others I would like opinions on and any knowledge to give to him to help him along. I really appreciate it

At this age, you should see the embryo's eye, maybe a bit of movement, and clear veins. If you're not sure about an egg, candle from the round end, through the air cell. It's much easier to see the veins that way than if the light is going through the whole egg.

I can see blood rings. There are quite a few I am questioning.
To be honest I'm questioning all 8 of them. I know 3 or 4 have weird rings in them but look empty. Then the ones with the black dot looks iffy because its almost like there's a blood ring around them. Im not sure what to tell my son to do. He was originally given 21 eggs. 10 were I fertile.

Words can be deceiving. I know what you what you mean by "clear veins" but another may not use the right definition. Clear as in distinct-easily visible.

Unfortunately I think they're all goners. How old were the eggs when you got them? What incubator are you using? Have you checked temp with a calibrated thermometer? Is there any movement visible?

My husband made a styrofoam incubator. Still air and he was doing a dry hatch. I think with it being in the house the temp must have fluctuated to much. He tried to keep it between 100-101 and 28%‐35% humidity. The eggs were 4 days old.

Still air should be a constant 102. That's possible, incubators should be kept in a very stable environment. Have you actually calibrated the thermometer? I've also had really bad luck with styrofoam incubators. I know some have decent hatch rates in them, but I just don't like them. I've never tried the fancier ones (like a Hovabator) though.
