I need help diagnosing a shell-less egg problem-PICS

Hey Kelly -

It has been a while and I thought I'd check in with you on this issue. How is Daphne doing?

Penny eventually went through a molt in the fall and resumed laying in January. Her first egg was soft off the roost, but then started laying normal eggs after that. She laid normally until late March and is now back to laying the soft eggs, usually in the nest box. What a mess! The other two are laying fine - 4 to 5 eggs a week each, which isn't bad for a couple of three year olds.

I'm curious as to what happened with your girl. Hope all is well!

Hey Shelley, I've been thinking about you & your girls too!
Things have been so busy I havent logged onto BYC in ages. Daphne is laying again, normal eggs. I saw a couple of soft shells under the roost at the start of spring, but I have no idea which girl laid them.
Sunny is going broody again as we speak so I'm going to buy some fertile eggs again. Most of my other girls are laying at a strong pace now, the winter was terrible-very few eggs. all seven of my 3 year olds seem to be strong & healthy.
Other than that things are good, how about you?

Good to hear from you, Kelly! I thought about you and your girls on their "Hatch-day" back in March. It's hard to believe that our "Spring Chicks '06" are now old ladies of 3 years! Be sure to post if Sunny hatches out some chicks. It'll be fun to watch you go through 'babies' again. Are you still going to try for the dark eggs?

My kids have been bugging me to get some chicks, especially since we're getting fewer eggs now that the girls are older and with Penny laying the soft eggs. Since it would involve enlarging the run and I've had zero time for such activities, I haven't pursued anything.

Otherwise, things are good. I'm looking forward to the kids being out of school in a few weeks so that life can slow down just a little bit.
