I really really need help with this pattern. Booooo. I've only followed one other pattern before this crazy one I chose, and it was a Mcalls basic purse pattern. I don't understand the amount of fabric I need and I definitely don't understand what in the world it's saying about 8 buttons 1/2" - 3/4", on each side. Why would I need 8 buttons yet the pic of the product is showing four? And what is "Novelty yarn?"

This pattern says "EASY". Easy for who? I'm a novice here with my very first sewing machine.

I want to cry.

I haven't used this pattern, but I googled the pattern number and read the info on the pattern back. The "eight 1/2 - 3/4 inch buttons" is for view B which is a reversible coat and is actually closed with velcro, but the buttons are to be used 4 per side as "decoration" Hope this helps.

Me too! I hope that's the pattern Hollie has.

And Hollie, is view A for a knit or crochet coat? When I see "novelty yarn" it usually refers to yarn used to knit/crochet and can be anything that doesn't look like the standard skein of yarn - knobby, sparklywoven, etc.

I believe the novelty yarn is for the trim on the red coat. You can use any kind of trim you want to use. It looks like they used yarn for the trim in the picture.

Yes, the 8 buttons are for decoration. Like a double breasted pea coat. I know the pattern picture shows 4 buttons, but if you look at the one the dog is wearing, you can see 2 buttons next to each other.

Measure your dog from the base of the neck to the base of it's tail. This will give you the size you need. XS is for 7 - 10 inches, etc.
Under that size, you it will tell you how much material you need. Say you are going to make an XS coat B (with the buttons), if the fabric you want is 45 inches wide you will need 5/8 of a yard of your main color (outside) and 5/8 of a yard for the contrasting color (the collar, cuffs, and inside).

I hope this helps.
