HELLO,

So today one of my chickens got into the dog kennel and she was attacked, we got her out of there in time but she has puncture marks in her back, and she is doing fine. is there anything that we can do about the holes and keep flys out of there also, I know that i need to keep an eye on her because of the other chickens might peck at her but i am not worried about that part most worried about the holes and the blood and keeping the flys out.

Clean her wounds--irrigate with regular strength hydrigen peroxide. If flies have laid eggs in the holes, it will help get the maggots out. However you do not want to continue using the regular strength hydrogen peroxide as it will prevent tissue from regrowing.

Get either SWAT! or FLYS OFF! (Same product, one marketed for pets, the other for livestock) and spray or wipe on the wounds. This is an ointment that contains a pesticide to repel and kill insects.

If at all possible, bring the bird inside where you can keep a closer eye on her until she recovers--this should also remove her from most flies. You may want to give abroad spectrum antibiotic to prevent infection from the wounds spreading through her system.

The holes could indeed be a problem. Puncture wounds are hard to get the germs out. Vet care and antibiotics might be a good idea.

At a minimum, bring her indoors til she is healed, which will solve the fly problem. Because of the punctures, a warm bath would be a good idea. Just put her in a sink or tub and bathe her off good with a little natural soap or Betadine in the water. Put some Neosporin or other antibiotic ointment or salve on the wounds. Watch them and clean again if needed.

Threehorses has written a bunch of threads on here about wound care for chickens.
