Hello,

My name is Robert, I watched a report about Pakistan. I thought someone should help them. So part of the plan includes raising chickens. So here I am.

I have acquired some acreage there, and need some - lots - of advice for this project.

If you have time to help me, I would greatly appreciate it. Right now I have 7 people helping me in Pakistan, 1 in Canada, and 1 in Arizona. This is a Christian ministry, assisted by Muslims who are excited about this work.

I used to have a few chickens, Rhode Island Reds, and my parents and kids loved to watch them - and of course eat their eggs.

So all I know so far is that I would like to start with about 1,000 baby chicks. Beyond that, I don't know anything - but YOU do!

I hope to hear from you soon. And our heavenly Father bless you!

Thank you very much.

You can also reach me via PM here.

How do you plan to house them /keep predators from reaching them?

It would probably be best to start with a cabinet incubator and hatching eggs. Shipping live birds is best left to the big companies with 10s of millions of dollars.

You need to go to the USDA website for regs about exporting poultry and also to the Paki govt. on their regs for importation.

Have you researched the breeds already present and viable in Pakistan?
There may be a bunch of breeds that wouldn't be appropriate depending on where your property is located.

That said, there are other issues to deal with.
The rules change daily.
There is currently a ban on exporting to Afghanistan.

Pakistan already has a huge poultry industry and export to other parts of the Middle East.

Welcome!

I have to be honest that I am not going to be much help with what sounds like a large project. I only have 5 pet bantams in a suburban back yard so ‘grand scale chicken keeping’ is definitely not on my resume.

However, I did want to say kudos to you and best of luck!

I hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun. Unlike non chicken loving friends, family and colleagues, BYC’ers never tire of stories or pictures that feature our feathered and non feathered friends

"Hi this sounds like a cool project
Just be careful jumping in to this all at once
What will you be raising these chickens for
I breed and sell chicks &I chickens so hopefully l can help"

"What will you be raising these chickens for"

After I learned about the plight of Christian slaves in Pakistan, I wanted to do something about it. I am developing an overall plan to raise Christians from the most vulnerable, abused people, to a wealthy, spiritually empowered people. We will be educating the children, vocational training adults, providing housing, and giving them jobs or small businesses to operate. Now evenly them most uneducated, poorest Muslim can have a Christian end up on death row (check out the story of Asia Bibi).

I want to resettle them on a farm/colony (I have acquired the property). To begin immediately, we are providing temporary housing, and providing 1,000 baby chicks, fencing, some type of suitable protection (tents??), feed, and a monthly wage to those caring for them, etc as a start. We plan on other projects as we can afford it (vertical farming in containers), and conventional farming - goats, cows, water buffalo. In junction with that we are starting stores in cities to sell our products and products we will buy from Christian farmers.

My policy is to not ask for monetary donations, but unused, unwanted clothing, tools, machinery, etc for their personal use and for resale, such as Goodwill or Salvation Army stores. All I am asking for here is extensive advice from someone who will care to give that to us, specifically how on the chicken production. I do not want to do this in a caged production if possible.

So, the advice needed will will need to take into consideration the climate and other conditions of this property. I just acquired the property, so I do not have the specifics of what is involved.

As far as the specific use of these chickens, I will need advice on that. The primary use is for egg production. A secondary use will be to sell the roosters in our stores or in markets (those we help selling for us), selling them live or prepared.

"I breed and sell chicks & I chickens so hopefully l can help"

I would love your help. I hope to find someone to be somewhat committed to the project so we can get specific step by step instructions and advice. Since you breed chickens, that would be a huge help. My plan to to train "technicians" to visit the farms and monitor the efforts of those raising the chickens and harvesting the eggs, etc. But to breed chickens and produce fertilize eggs, what to breed, that seems like some hidden, arcane knowledge only few possess. So I would deeply appreciate your help.

I am doing this as a ministry and a business separated from the ministry, each part (ministry/business) done as appropriate. I chose to have a business aspect because as having been involved in ministry for 35 years. The way money is raised and used in ministry is appalling and inexcusable. My goal is to start with minimal donations with the business to quickly overtake the need for donations. As a matter of legitimate, Scripturally prescribed donations, we will continue to ask for donations of used, unwanted clothing, tools, etc.

"Just be careful jumping in to this all at once"

The only way I can live is by going all out. If I lose everything, I have lost everything before. That's part of life. I have been shot at enough in Mexico to understand what else is at stake when you undertake helping people in countries that are not normally tourist destinations for those who are knowledgeable.

Poor Pakistani Christians are truly humble and good people for the most part. That does not mean that there are many, many who will do anything to take advantage of you. But that is my Father's problem to deal with, not mine.

Our Father greatly bless you for your offer to help. The people you help will know your name and know what you have done for them. If we change Pakistan, you will have been part of history. Thank you my friend.

Hi Teila (nice name),

I am the only one in the US working on this project (with a possible helper soon), so wishing me well means a lot to know others see the value in this project. My understanding is that if we stop exporting war (except when absolutely necessary), and we export prosperity, ultimately helping the poor to prosper not only will work, but it is our Father's solution for world peace (when it is combined with His renewal of His divine Life in us).

So, bless you for your wishing me well.

By the way, I will have the Pakistani Christians who work on this specific aspect of the project join BYC. They will love you guys and the interest you show in them and your compassion for their suffering. Umm, they will also be strictly warned not to ask for ANY monetary or personal donations. This must be our strict policy. For one thing it is not right to solicit money, but more importantly, they need to learn to place their dependence on our heavenly Father.

Thank you, Teila - so nice to meet you.

Hi Chicken Canoe,

In response to your comments:

Shipping live birds is best left to the big companies with 10s of millions of dollars.”
There is currently a ban on exporting to Afghanistan.”

What I are doing in Pakistan (and hopefully other countries in the future), I am not interested in “big business”. The very nature of my work means that I need to use as many people as possible in order to create the greatest number of people as possible in our workforce. Instead of shipping our products to other countries, I would prefer to replicate the work there, and help develop other countries. So nothing will be shipped out of the countries, except for what I would consider legitimate exports of material or cultural products ( for example clothing unique to the country, not readily available or being produced in that country).

You need to go to the ... Paki govt. on their regs for importation.”
Have you researched the breeds already present and viable in Pakistan?”

Yes, we will need to evaluate what breeds are available in Pak, and if we decide, based on advice in this site, to utilize other breeds, to import other breeds, we will need to check with the Pak gov.
An interesting question that occurs to me, is what breeds do they have that may be productive in areas of the US, or wherever, in which the climate and conditions are similar to Paki chicken breeds.

Pakistan already has a huge poultry industry and export to other parts of the Middle East.”

Yes, chicken production on a massive scale in Pakistan is limited to one family, to my understanding. However it is not illegal for others to enter into that business. To explain my initial business plan better, we are funding the start up of many small chicken farms. Yes, we will buy their products, or they can sell to others. But we will pay them a basic salary plus on a production basis. Our goal is not to suppress these people further, but to help them to rise from the lowermost level of Pak society to as high as they are able to reach, and to the uppermost when possible, not defined by some imposed limitation, but defined by their ability. This is the idea of the “Peter Principle”, where people continually rise to a higher level, and when they fail at that level, they go back to the level at which they enjoy success and happiness.

Some other things you may want to read.”

When I find the appropriate person who wants to oversee this aspect of the work, I will pass on your recommendations to them. Right now I have a young man highly interested in vertical farming/aeroponics, and he will begin studying that aspect. To mention something about him, he is from a very poor family, living in a very poor village, but he scored among top highest grades in their national testing in Pakistan. This Christian young man with zero chance of attending college will now have his tuition paid, and a salary comparable to what educated and trained people receive in Pakistan. He is spending time now helping to develop our plan, and when he is in school, working minimal hours, he will be given the same salary.

I thank you for your comments. Obviously you know a great deal about poultry production, and its business. I thank you very much for your response, and we will know what a cabinet incubator is by the end of the day.

Thankyou very much for taking the time to list the references you cited. They will be read so that we our as knowledgeable as possible about the Chicken industry.

Our heavenly Father is real and he will do amazing things to change our little planet and its people for better. Bless you for being interested in us and making your suggestions.

Wow l admire your attitude
FYI do you see the quote button at the bottom of post if you click that you don't have to tipe it out

Hi BBChicks

Wow, I was wondering how the heck to do that!! I wanted to ask, but I didn't even know how to frame the question. thank you so much!!

You know what, the Aussie lady said there would be friends here, and there are.

One day when you read that the weak, defenseless, persecuted Pakistani Christians has become a meaningful, strong presence in Pakistan, I hope you remember that you all here were part of history.

Our Creator and Father bless you all.
