I NEED HELP W/ PUPPY!

I just edited my first post about the puppy and added some pics, he's asleep right now just got done running around outside and Im not gonna wake him up cuz I'm enjoying not getting chewed on for a few mins lol

Just in case you have not been told, the tape worm is generally ingested by eating fleas. Fleas carry the tape worm . So you should also vacuum and flea treat the puppy and area he/she has been.

And yes, go to the vet. General over the counter wormers do not treat tape worms.

Call your vet, they can mail out some pills or you can order them on-line via dr foster & smith (one example) The meds are relatively cheap. If you have other dogs...keep them from injesting, sniffing..the pups poop.

Your pup will be fine

Is it freezing in your area? If your yard doesn't get a hard freeze the tapeworm ova that you saw in the poo will crawl into the grass and infect your yard and re-infect your puppy. A hard freeze will kill the ova.
Also, picking up the poo right away will keep them from getting into your grass.

Will you be putting your dog in flea/tick/hwt ? Most of the common meds also kill all common intestinal parasites EXCEPT tapes.

My 60lb dog routinely gets small amounts of cooked garlic and she is the picture of health. I think cooking does reduce the benefits somewhat though.

ODs of garlic and onions can cause hemolytic anemia in dogs and more severly in cats.

Collect a fresh sample of poo and store it in a ziploc for the vet. If you can get a worm or several, all the better. Take the fecal sample and the pup to the vet. I know you said it was 30+ minutes away, but it's a simple appointment and if you can find the time a walk-in may be worth it.

Get a general check-up, get the shots up to date if they are not, get the puppy dewormed, and pick up some heartguard(for heartworms) and some flea medication. Many veterinary offices have a puppy package that will include all of this.

You can buy tapeworm meds over the counter now, you don't have to get them from a vet.
Here Petsmart and Petco have them. Just make sure it says it's for tapeworm. The active ingredient is praziquantel.
They are about $20-25 and have directions for the weight of your dog/puppy. Unlike other worms you don't have to treat twice.. just once, unless you have a major flea infestion
at your home, then I'd recommend a second treatment after you get rid of the fleas.
This type of worm is transmitted from fleas.

Good luck!

If you happen to have livestock, and use Safeguard (Fenbenzadole)
it works great for tapeworms in dogs.

The dosage is 1ML/ 5lbs, given 3 days in a row.

A bottle of the 10% "Goat Wormer" is about $12, and will worm several dogs, and has a long shelf live

Be very careful with livestock wormers on dogs. Certain breeds have severe reactions, I know collies and toy dogs are especially susceptible to Ivermectin. I know many have good results but personally I wouldnt risk it just to save a couple bucks. You are basically giving your dog a poison when you worm.... it can be difficult to be sure about the dosage when you are using something for animals that can be a thousand pounds versus a dog under 100. It's just my opinion but I'd rather error on the safe side with my beloved pups.
