Dear Chicken Lovers,

I own 1 Buff Chicken and she is 6 1/2 weeks old.
She is medium size (Pullet).
I was wondering will she get any larger? When Should I put her on Egg layer mesh?
Currently she is on scratch Feed.

Thanks,

Joshua Burke

She needs more protein than scratch feed provides. Scratch is around 8% and grower feed is 16-18%. She'll grow with the protein she needs.

Anytime around 20 weeks of age or after when you run out of the grower switch over to layer feed which again is usually 15-16% protein. Scratch should only be given as a treat not sole feed.

Orpingtons can reach up to 8 pounds, so she should get larger. At 6 and a half weeks old she should be fed medicated chick starter to get her strong bones and a healthy body. Scratch grains are cheap, but are unhealthy for chickens to eat as their main diet. When she turns 16 weeks you should feed her fifty- fifty of medicated chick starter and layer feed. When she turns 20 weeks of age just switch her to just layer feed. I hope this helps!

What Can I substitute with for protein until I get the money to buy grower?

You are right! Right now I'm only giving her 8%

Thanks in advance!

Jesup Farming Milling told me 1 - 4 weeks start them on starter and 4-7 weeks start them on scratch and 7-20 weeks start them on laying mesh. I'm confused?

I believe y'all more than that store. Lol

So basically what y'all are saying she is not getting enough protein?

Yes, she need more protein. She'll forage for it with bugs on the lawn and you can give her meal worms but really, get some starter/grower feed which is a complete feed with everything she needs, vitamins, minerals, fiber, fat...etc. Scratch for treat.

That's what I said too.
