I've decided to treat myself to a decent camera for my birthday next month and I've my heart set on a Canon. I take lots of pics, often in less than ideal light and conditions, so I want a camera that can take nice clear photographs and have at least 10 times zoom (my current one has 4x

). I would like to hear from you all that owns/uses Canon cameras which model you use, what you like/don't like about it, which you'd recommend, etc. I do not want or need the most expensive one out there, but I don't want to buy one of the cheaper ones and find it's not what I want/need either. I would love to hear some reviews on the different models before I choose and buy one.

I have always been a Canon fan but have had poor luck with digital s. I find the element protection (moisture, sand, grime) to be inadequate and have bricked a couple of digital point and shoot. The digital rebel xsi I use is a factory refurbished model and has held up fairly well but the stock lens it came with sucks.
If I were to purchase a new camera it wouldn't be another canon.

Thank you! I've spoken to a few people and most of them are Nikon fans, so I'm now looking into those as well.

Follow up. I bought a (highly recommended) Canon PowerShot SX50 HS. I've made a list of requirements and asked the salesman to recommend something. We discussed a few models and he said this one is the best fit for what I need/want it for. I really like the 50x zoom, which was high on my list and it takes videos as well, which is a handy bonus. I'm going to play a bit tomorrow and see what it's like.

I have a Canon EOS 500D, bought it around the time it came out. I don't know how it fits into the US Rebel branding, but it's one of those. At the moment, it's an older version of the second cheapest range of DSLR's from Canon. In my experience, there is a reason why most cameras sold worldwide are Canons. They're great to use. You can take great shots with both Nikon's and Canon's, but the Canon's are maybe a bit more user friendly for beginners. If it's a DSLR you're looking for, more important than the camera itself, is the lens. That's what will influence your pictures the most, so check out reviews online for different ones and select one that works for you. If it's a point and shoot you're looking for, I'd say that most modern smartphones are better investments. They are always in your pocket, and take as good photo's as cameras. I do like the high end Nokia phone's for the camera abilities, but I used to work for them for a while, so I'm a bit biased.

*Edit* Looks like I should have read the last post too before replying

No problem @vehve ! I appreciate the feedback. This one has a fixed lens, but when comparing it to another model that was quite pricey, the salesman said this one's lens is actually better? It cost a bit more than I planned to spent, so I hope I'm going to love it. I'm just an enthusiastic photographer, not a pro by any stretch of the imagination, and I want something that is going to make taking decent photos easier for me and something that can zoom! My old camera (Sony CyberShot) was not worth it's price tag with 4x zoom and video quality so awful, I don't bother using it.
