I need someone to stupid-proof me on the Blue genetics in Orpingtons.

At one time Angela Stanley had some male chicks hatch 'chocolate" which she culled. Over a year ago she lost her flock so I would have no clue who might have some her stock that have seen the 'chocolate' color.

He is a poorly colored blue. They do come in all shades. If he were in my breed pens he would be culled. When you breed him you are passing on his diluted black genes.

Have you seen my Wheeler?

This is Wheeler last Feb 2009.

This is a video of Wheeler this past month. His tail is a little ragged from the long hard winter. We had as much as 5 ft on snow on the ground through most of our winter. That kind of cold and ice is hard on their feathers. I'll be looking forward to his coming molt.

I have eggs available if you want hatch some other stock to try and grow out another rooster with a deeper 'blue' mantle and saddle.

From what I heard Dun and Chocolate look very much the same..
From what I read a Chocolate rooster over a Black hen that cross should produces chocolate hens and black (split chocolate) roosters...

I dont know if chocolate is in the U.S. But it could have been moved into another breed and be here. Also, some genetic combinations can look like something they are not. I dont think that blue roo is a chocolate. He may be brown red based under it all and it is just some red pigment bleeding thru. I believe its best to have silver underneathe a black than red. Since blue is a diluter in itself , I would suspect that the roo is just showing some bleeding to give a brownish cast to his dark area. But there are some other diluting genes that could be causing it. But for a show quality blue color that bleeding would be a defect in the show room as they want that black over lay to realy have a contrast against the blue. Spanish andalusions are good examples of that type of blue. Depends on the breeds standard , some breed want a smooth even blue like a lavender colored chicken.
