I need the truth about chicken noise - ASAP

welcome-byc.gif
My birds aren't nearly as loud as neighborhood dogs barking. They do their egg songs after they have layed their eggs but it only lasts a few minutes. Also what kind of fence is between you and your neighbor? A privacy fence I hope. You are allowed 3 birds. I agree with the other posts and I say go for it. I don't think you'll regret it. You will get addicted and want more.

I don't have any close neighbors but I still hear the dogs around my area barking. One family in our area has 5 Rottweiler’s.

I would say you are within your legal rights so you should be fine. I would just make sure you make the coop and run not only dog proof but HUMAN proof. You wouldn't want her poisoning your hens. Good luck with everything.

We live in a really small neighborhood. Next door was a really loud dog. When we would go into the backyard, mowing the lawn, planting the garden, or just doing whatever he would bark all the time. Would not shut up. Our chicken would walk around the backyard, even by the fence and he just looked at her. Didn't seem to mind her at all. Apparently he just did not like people.

Plus, last year, I had 10 roosters and 7 hens in the backyard at one time and they still did not make as much noise as the barking dog next door. Our hens were pretty quiet. Most of our neighbors didn't even know we had chickens!

Good luck with your neighbor.

I have 3 chickens and no extra noise from my dog or the neighbor's 3 large dogs. One of my neighbor's dog only barks when he/she senses my dog is in the backyard but nothing for the chickens. When my chickens are noisy with laying eggs, I see their dogs just sitting in their yard ignoring the noise.
And yes to my surprise, chickens are loud but if your neighbor can put up with her barking dog, you shouldn't worry about the chicken noise. For me, I prevent them from making noise in the morning by keeping the coop dark until 9am and then I let them out into the yard. My chickens are loud for about 1 hour in a day but not continuous loud. They'll be loud for like 10 seconds and then stop. Then again after a few minutes.

I have quacking ducks that I think are loud but never seem to bother my neighbors. I also agree with the others, a "bird" noise is nothing like a constant barking dog! Go for it!!

FYI....all my neighbor dogs and cats don't seem to even notice my ducks. I think they all get used to whatever might be next door.

This lovely neighbor sounds like a busybody shrew. Nothing you do or say will change her attitude or make her happy. Be prepared for her to whine and kvetch. Get your girls and enjoy them! You have been more than polite by asking her opinion and certainly for putting up with her constantly barking dog. Let her know that directly when she says anything about chicken noise. There is no way she will be awakened at 5 am by your girls. Besides it is her dog, let her worry about it being upset by the chickens. Of course, I would say if the dog barks constantly anyway what doesn't upset it?!?
Just make sure your girls are safe. In the future, don't ask her opinion, it's not her business.
Good luck!

I think your neighbor is very selfish. She allows her dog to be a nuicance but gets all hostile about you getting a few hens???

Remember hens are quiet all night long. OK they get up early in the morning and have a big squawk-a-doodle about egg-laying time.

But a dog that will bark at nothing for hours in the middle of the night is MUCH more of a nuicance in the neighborhood.

It may be true that the chickens will become the focus of the dog's attention. But the fact is your neigbor is a bad dog owner. If she is annoyed by her own dog's barking what has she done about it? Don't even offer her eggs, give her a Caesar Milan DVD.

I live in a close neighborhood and most of my neighbors do not know I have chickens. but they are gone to work early. I'm not gona lie, when hens lay an egg they are NOISEY!! I was shocked how noisy they were in the morning. I can hear a neighbors chickens singing the egg song and they are 3 blocks away. but I also hear their dogs bark all day long from 3 blocks away.

problem is she thinks your chickens will exacerbate an already noisy problem... her dog!!! perhaps she should keep her business and her noise on her own property under control. her yappy dog is not your problem.

I would not waste perfectly good eggs on a nosey shrew.

I think I'm a little cranky tonight...
