We are trying this for the first time. Eggs are in lockdown. A friend suggested we cut a small part at the bottom of the carton for better air circulation, so we'll see how this goes.

Let me know how it works for you.

Very neat idea, would be great to keep the hatch-lings separate for parentage as well. I also do the egg carton trick to keep the eggs from rocking and rolling all around, and I've never had a problem with it. Can't wait to see how this works for you.

How exactly do you place them in the egg cartons? I know you have to put the pointy end down but do they have to be at an angle or does the air sac have to be positioned a certain way.

Hmmm...I was told to just put them in, air sac up. I have bantam eggs in there, so they sort of lean.

I cut the sides down on the egg cartons, and cut a hole in the bottom, I put the eggs, straight up and down, like they were in the turner, with air cell at the top.

Here's a couples of pictures of a previous hatch.

I have 3 eggs that will be mixed breed chicks if they hatch so I might try placing them in an egg carton. How many eggs did you put into lockdown that way in that hatch and how many hatched. The only problem I know for sure I will have is I want have room to cover the tray to keep the hatched chicks in it because my trays are so shallow and the eggs will be sticking over the top of it. any ideas for this problem?

Before I had auto turners I always hatched button eggs in egg cartons w/ the top cut off. It made it easier for me to hand turn them. When they hatched they could jump right out though.

Oh I have hatched lots and lots using the egg cartons, and always have great results, and with my own eggs usually 100% hatches. I have no idea how to keep the hatched chicks in the trays, sorry I am not help with that. I think with your system, no egg cartons are needed as you already have your dividers and cover.
