Well, you all have probably seen pictures of our APBT Halo in my posts. He's been around all but a few of the chickens we have since they hatched. He has always been good with them, licking their fuzzy little bottoms, watching them toodle around the kitchen pecking at crumbs, sticking his nose in the brooder once or twice a day just to see how everyone was doing. Well, to be honest with ya, I worried that as good as he was with them in this setting, that as young and rowdy as he is that if he was ever in a setting where another dog went after one, he would probably join the chase.

Well, today we were out at the coop. It's not here, it's out at my FIL's place and he has 4 older dogs that would chase the chickens even though they are too fat and out of shape to catch them. Halo likes to go along because it's a chance for him to run unleashed and play with the other dogs. He was out in the fields chasing wild birds and having a good old time

He came back to the coop to see what I was up to, and I had the door open because I had just walked in. He came in, sniffed the chickens... gave Spaghetti a start. They don't know each other like the others do

Well, Sammy... my FIL's stupid Golden Retriever starts to come into the coop. I yell at her to get out. She starts to leave, but notices one of the chickens near the door and starts to head toward it when Halo rushes over and MAKES her leave! It was this serious growl bark that said... "If you do not leave NOW, I WILL make you leave!" He didn't bite her or anything... just ran up, made his point and made sure she exited. She backed out ASAP! He ran over to her just to make sure. And then all was well. They took off and went running around the yard again

It was something I honestly didn't think Halo had in him to do. We always say they're Halo's babies.... but I never actually expected him to be protective of them, OR even to be mature enough to know how to get a point across without going too far.

I'm very proud of our little guy! Now I know that when we do make it to the country that he will make an EXCELLENT chicken dog and will not allow anything to harm them on his watch!

Here he is

....... IN ACTION!!! Telling Rocky he better stay out of the chicken coop! He sat in the doorway while I put shavings down and did my chores and snarled at any who got too close. He went in the house before we left and got attacked by Gizzy (She thinks she is the pack leader now that Pepper has passed on).... poor Halo, he didn't know what to do. So he just stood there and got nipped at and then ran out and got in the car to go home

Good dog! Glad it worked out for you. My heeler couldn't care less about the chickens but hates other dogs so I turn her out when the chickens free range (except for lately of course because of the puppy situation.)

what a pretty dog!..i wish i could trust mine with the chickens...

What a beautiful dog!!! When I first started reading the story I thought it was going to be the other way around. That it wasn't going to have a happy ending. I was so happy to read the happy ending!!

Good dog.

Keep an eye on him though. He is still a dog. He might want to play with his friends the chickens.

We had a dog that think had some healer in her. We found a chicken dead between her paws. We hadn't noticed her chasing the chickens or any other problems. My guess is that maybe she was trying to herd them, play with them, or something else not malicious and accidently killed the chicken. We still gave her away because we couldn't stop her from chasing the wildlife.

All my APBTs have been great with small animals. We are still working with Bettie but she is getting better, her problem is getting way too excited and wanting to play with them.

Yeah, he occassionaly tries to get into the game when they get all flappy and loud

Sticks his butt in the air and paws at them asking to play

I've kept on him about it and remind him that he cannot play with them

I always keep an eye on him
