Dang, those little stinkers over at Cutler upped their price by 2 dollars and some change between yesterday morning and yesterday evening!!!! That's what I get for telling them they have the best price anywhere.
So my tentative plan is: EE eggs off ebay and I am still looking for some Welsummer and BLRW eggs. I am going to the show in Stockton in Jan which is also the weekend I am supposed to be moving....hmmmm..... which do you think I am going to be doing??? So I am debating whether to get eggs and put them in now and hope they make it through the move (only 15 minute drive) or do I wait until I have all the egg sources rounded up and get them all at one time and wait until after we move and after the Stockton show???? And I did just find out that we have a local poultry auction the first and third Sunday down in Roseville. LIKE I NEEDED TO KNOW THAT!!!! I feel hatching fever coming on!!!
I just found out that we have a local livestock auction as well every Saturday. Almost local. What are you going to do with all those chicks when they get older????
jeaucamom,
you commented about the various thermometers taking up space in the Hovabator 1588 that you are going to use. Here's a tip for that.
I'm using one of the very flat Accurite thermometer/hygrometer units from Walmart in my 1588. My 1588 has the egg turner so there is no good flat area on the bottom to place this thermometer unit. So I got some of the adhesive Velcro strips from the craft/sewing department at Wal-mart and trimmed it to fit on each of the sides of the face of the thermometer. Then I just stuck the whole thing on the inside of the viewing window that is on the top of the incubator. I can easily see through the clear top and read the thermometer/hygrometer display. I kept most of the probe cord secured by the twist tie and just set it in one of the unused egg holders in the egg turner. The temperature probe is then at the egg height. I'm not even using the water wiggler this time around as I'm pretty confident that the thermometer is really close on the temperatures.
Ok, I have the Accurite thermometer/hygrometer everybody is talking about. My probe is off .7 degrees, not a big deal, but the hygrometer is off by 13% Take the time to test them. Use a medical thermometer in the water wiggler after you've had it on for a day or so. Stick the medical thermometer in the wiggler, and read it while it's in the wiggler. Then Speckledhen gave me a great link to a place that tells you how to test your hygrometer.
How many days before you get the bator going and you have to move? If you have to move it during the 21 days, I'd say wait. If they will hatch out before you move, go for it.
