Actually, the structure in front of the shed is their outdoor run. We built it with a serious roof since we are in snow country.

Their original coop was a tractor from www.coops4you.com. We obtained it prior to the arrival of the chickens, and frankly before we spent much time at BYC. In this photo of the run, you can see the tractor inside the run where we used it as temporary housing.

Anyhow, we planned on 6 birds, ended up with 10 (now 9 since we lost one), and that many birds were not going to be happy in a 4x6x2 tractor. Thus we needed more space...

First we built the run, then the shed, and inside the shed is the coop area as well as a storage loft. The shed is in our front yard, visible from the street, and we wanted something that was appealing.

I have to say that I certainly made decisions that escalated the costs significantly (such as the gable roof, not to mention the sway ridge). But it's far from an eyesore, and I'm happy it is done.

It's a good thing too, as it just started snowing last night, and continues this morning. I went out to the coop an hour ago to say hi to the birds, and some marched over to their door waiting for me to let them out to the run. Marching down the snow covered ramp, they didn't even leave the tunnel before turning around and returning to the shelter of the coop.
