I put some fertile eggs underneath her...JUNE 6th- PICS ON PG 6

Here's our five Jersey Giant chicks so far with their Bantam Cochin surrogate mother. She still has two eggs under her--one Jersey Giant and one Jersey Giant/Easter Egger mutt. We were really hoping the mutt would hatch so we could see what that mix looks like, but we're coming to and end on the 22nd day now and are beginning to lose hope on these last two a little bit. At least one of the other five just hatched today though, so I guess there's still a possibility...

How are everybodies babies doing? I had 10 hatch but lost one yesterday. I have no clue what happened to it. I found it dead on the ground without a mark on it. Im thinking my jersey giant may have inadvertantly suffocated it? The 2 hens that hatched the eggs are co-parenting which is a pretty cool thing to see. The jersey giant is fiercely protective while the silkie is very nuturing and loving. They make a good team. The chicks already have wing feathers coming in and have doubled in size in a week. The chicks and their mamas free range all day. I have bowls of game bird crumble and chick starter set out all over the yard and have been putting plates of cottage cheese out as well which puts the chicks into a feeding frenzy. The chicks are dust bathing and hunting worms and seem to be healthy and thriving.

The dad was a blue cochin and the moms were a mille fluer along with an easter egger and cochins. It was a real mutt mix I got but I have to say that there is one in there that looks like a pure easter egger. Its chipmunk striped with green legs. There are feather footed chicks as well as non feather footed, bantams and regular size. This was the only pic I could get with them all in one place . When they get a bit bigger I will try to post individual pics of the chicks. The silkie and the jersey giant are quite the pair to see herd all those little chicks around.

That's just too sweet

Is that the J Giant that you got from me? She's pretty. I always wondered how big they get. So are you going to keep these babies and chance the CEO to come a'knockin?

With a Blue Cochin daddy there'll be some pretty birds in there

Yes that is the bird I got from you. She didnt get as big as I expected her too and she lays eggs smaller than my orps but she is a very consistant layer and really sweet tempered. In fact Im thinking about having the orps processed and keeping her. She is an excellant mama. I wont be keeping the chicks. If I have the orps processed I might keep 3 of the chicks provided Im certain they are pullets.. I am over the 2 bird limit now so....not sure what will happen
