I joined in March 2021 and many of you know me. But I realised I never introduced myself properly. I found the New Member question templates and decided to answer them!
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I got 2 large fowl silkie hens in September 2020. But before that, I always loved birds, specifically poultry, so I already knew quite a lot. There is so much more to learn about chickens, which is why I joined BYC!
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
I have 5 chickens; 2 silkie hens (Pippin and Fries) which are just over a year old and 3 young silkies (Kiwi, Pickles, Blue) which are 13 weeks old. One of my hens (pippin) has been going broody regularly and really wants chicks so I gave her some eggs and now she is on day 18 with 4 polish bantam eggs, so hopefully they will hatch!
(3) What breeds do you have?
I love ornamental, friendly breeds. Since I keep chickens as pets\companions. I only have large fowl silkies at the moment, but hopefully my hen can have some polish babies soon.
(4) What are your favourite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
I love how each chicken has a different personality. I really enjoy raising chickens because it feels really rewarding to watch them grow, knowing that you are giving them the best life they could ever have. I love to learn about birds and having chickens makes learning about birds much easier. my favourite part, though, has to be cuddle time; watching Kiwi (one of my young pullets) sleeping on my lap is so relaxing.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
This is hard to answer, since I spend most of my time with my chickens, or reading about them. I like to draw chickens on my laptop.
EXTRAS
I have a beagle and 2 Russian tortoises.
Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
I first found BYC when I was first thinking about getting chickens, so maybe a couple years ago. I used it for most of my studying. I decided to join so I could learn more about birds, and also help people with their chickens.
Thanks for reading, and I know this is a late intro. I just wanted to do these questions!
