So my Sebright hatched a singleton about 10 days ago. I had her also sitting on an egg from my Sultan as well. She sat on the egg for about 8 days and booted it out this morning. The egg was previously brooded by my cochin but she's busy with 12 eggs. Well, now she has the sultan egg back. When I saw the egg out of the nest box, which is on the crate floor, I kinda rolled it back into the box.....as I did this I was thinking "oh no!" So she STILL booted it out an hour later. It felt cool so I candled it and I think I saw the chick move. Its due this weekend...I think. So I am hoping for the best and sticking it back undeer the cochin and letting it be until Saturday.

I think the reason OP is upset is because one hears so often that you should not roll an egg.. You should turn it one way and then turn it the oposite way the next time.. the theory is that if you roll it the same way each time, the chick will get twisted inside the egg.. sort of like winding up a propeller on a toy airplane with a rubber band..

personnaly, I think it would be a fluke to wind up an embryo..

I don't see what the problem is either...sorry. I always roll my eggs (palm of hand to roll about 60 eggs) Fit more into the bator with out the auto turner LOL....
Good luck with the egg

just a footnote.. If the incubation is far enouh to see movement, but you are not sure; float the egg in a bowl of warm water for a few seconds to a minute or so.. if there is movement it will bob the egg like a cork in the water.. very easy to see..

for comparison try an egg from the refrigerator to see how a dead egg would float.

I literally rolled it into the nestbox like a bowling ball on its last week of incubation....I guess I was worried about the yolk separating from the chick or perhaps killing the chick from the roll. I know you are supposed to turn an egg but....bowling it across a crate?????? I am hoping the hen didn't boot the egg out because she felt is was a dud. The egg is now under a serious brooder. Should I candle again tomorrow or just leave it til this weekend as planned?
