I have garden gloves that I use. The palm is rubberized for grip, and the back is cotton knit. I'm breaking a broody right now, and I pick her up with those. She's never tried to peck me, but my roo did peck me though the glove hard enough to leave a small bruise.

I'm hoping when I can have chicks (now is NOT a good time), this girl goes broody and is a good mom. She's an Orpington, and they are known for being good moms.

Mama hens are the best! I'd love to let my girls hatch their eggs, but no more boys for me!

Same here. I guess I got lucky with my mottled java, Shelley, she goes broody a lot, but has never given me any flack in the nest box at all.

I give my broodies day-old now, so I still get to see mamas with babies.

Maybe someday I'll let them hatch a clutch. My luck they'll ALL be cockerels...

Get a pair of cheap welders gloves from Harbor Freight. They're leather and come halfway up your forearm, and the leather is thin and supple enough to give a little more dexterity, plus they wear in and get more supple as you use them.
