I shouldn't have looked...

I meant why does the state law require it

Just guessing here but I am assuming because most livestock fowl are flock animals plus they rely on each other to generate enough heat while in transit. I think these laws were meant to help provide more humane environment for the chicks and less death.

The chicks I picked up from TSC couldn't have been more than 2-3 days old. They were literally the same size as the hatched chicks. I think I started out with 3 hatched chicks and I'm down to 1... One was limping from birth (likely stepped on by the broodies all trying to share the same box). It ended up being pecked to death before I could get it. A 2nd chick fell into the water bowl and drowned. I had tried to find some rocks to put in the water bowl on the chance of this happening but couldn't find any that would work properly.

So it's probably a good thing that I ended up getting the 6 chicks....

Every time I go into Tractor Supply I have the same problem. Right now I have six four month old pullets, four two month old pullets and a coop that needs repairs. I am going to order my feed online and have them deliver it to my car so I don't go in and end up with another half dozen baby chicks.

For the most part, I just try not to even walk down that aisle. If TSC hadn't switched back to the trough brooders, I probably would have resisted... The moment I saw the breeds they were offering, I knew I was in trouble. Had they been the regular offerings, I wouldn't have been tempted but these were on my wish list so..... ☺️

Long ago, chicks were colored with food dye, and sold as 'Easter pets', and most died, of course. Along with baby slider turtles, with painted shells. Total animal abuse, and finally became illegal. that's why no chicks sold individually.

Interesting, I’ve heard about the the colored Easter chicks and it makes me sick, I can’t believe someone would be so flippant with the life of an animal.

Ugh, now they're on my wish list too 😆
