I let my chickens out in a fenced in (but not covered) area I have set up in my yard. I have been letting them out and staying nearby as a few days ago a hawk flew into the yard. Today I was in the pen with them and had turned to pick up my Kindle (electronic book) when I turned around a Coopers hawk had swooped in at shoulder level. I clunked him with my Kindle. He went and perched in the tree next to the coop. Darn bird!

I can't believe it was bold enough to swoop while I was standing right there. They were literally 2 feet from me.

Haha, well 1st good job! He could have got your birds, and second...thats pretty scary that a hawk would come that close to where a human is... That makes me re-think about my future coop plans.

I had a red tailed hawk try that when my red stars were little and out playing it swooped down just a couple feet from me! Thankfully my corgi saw it coming before I did and positioned herself in front of the babies jumping at the hawk. They get pretty brave when they think there will be an easy meal. I'm glad you and your kindle (lol) were there to save the day.

Amazing topic BTW I saw it and laughed I mean what has to happen to slap a hawk?!? lol Now I know.

Good job with scaring it off. Now that it knows the chickens are there, be very careful that it can't get in with them. It's funny how quick we can move when it comes to protecting our "babies," whether they are animal or human.

Betcha he was sitting on that branch just cussing you out lol.
They do get pretty gutsy sometimes,
I had one do that to me last summer , I didn't see it sitting in the trees , stupid thing swooped just past my head, barely missed taking me down. little stinker.
