I snuck another one...shhhh! :)

That's only the beginning of chicken math. Soon, very soon, we will lure you into making the "correct" actions and getting more... *evil laughter*

Maybe you could pretend that the hatchery added the Australorp as a 'packing peanut,' when you open the box you could act very surprised then mention how nice it was of the hatchery to make sure your baby chickies stayed warm on their trip.

The husband will be none the wiser.

Upon opening the box: "Aww. How nice of them to put in a heat pack AND an extra chick! Too bad packing peanuts are always roosters....but let's wait and see."

Later: "Hmm....how interesting. Guess they messed up the sexing process again, because our "packing peanut" is a hen!"

You guys have given me a great idea! I have an order coming this week and wished I'd added a couple more. Since I'll be picking up the girls from the post office, I can stop by the feed mill and grab a couple babies, sneak them into the shipping box, and feign surprise when I get home! You guys are the best!!

Just hope your DH doesn't get suspicious and call the hatchery to make sure!

I feel like such an enabler.

In all honesty though, even with the best care sometimes you'll get chicks that don't make it. I ordered 6 babies that'll be arriving at the end of April, and while I'm prepared to house and feed 6... I'm realistic that I might end up with 5. If you can't quite pull a poker face with the 'packing peanut' story, best to use logic on the hubby. I'm jealous that you're getting cochins though, I really wish I had added one to my order. Maybe I can get some adorable banty cochins later, long after I've proven to my husband that chickens really are low maintenance.
